The picture of Jesus that has been handed down to us by the Christian Church for the last two millennia, bares little resemblance to the man, Jesus, born in Nazareth (not Bethlehem) about the year 6 BC. Jesus did not have blue eyes or straight shoulder length hair. His followers did not call him Christ or savior. In fact, his name was not even Jesus; it was "yehowshuwa," an Aramaic name that is correctly translated into English as Joshua.
For the first few decades after his death by crucifixion, the followers of Jesus were not called Christians but "followers of the way." These followers attempted to live by what they had heard Jesus say or by what others who heard his message said he said. Under extreme persecution as a cult, by the Romans and the conservative religious leaders of the time, the message was changed. Myths, like the "virgin birth" story, as well as supernatural events were added to the growing legends about Jesus.
More than 100 books were written about Jesus and his early followers during the last half of the first century and the beginning of the second century AD. Church officials argued for centuries, and are still arguing over which of these books represented the truth. Modern scholars including "The Jesus Seminar" have shed new light and presented new evidence as to what is most likely the true message of Jesus.
Reverend John McLaughlin takes a close look at this evidence and presents a fascinating new view of Jesus and his teachings. Reverend McLaughlin uses scholarship, humor and his unique point of view to present a clear picture of the teachings of this remarkable man. He strips away the doctrine, dogma and tradition that has for centuries masked the true teaching of the master teacher, Jesus.
What Jesus taught 2000 years ago is even more relevant today. His message is a practical way to live here and now. There is not one speck of condemnation in Jesus' message, which consistently affirms that God loves us all, unconditionally. You will laugh and you will be moved by the four lessons in this series "Jesus Christ, Who Are You?"
